CCC to UC Transfer Guide

Overview, requirements, and strategies for transferring from CCC to UC.

Last updated: Sep 27, 2025

Transferring from a California Community College (CCC) to a University of California (UC) campus is a well‑established pathway to a bachelor's degree. The UC system prioritizes California community college students in the transfer process, with specific programs to ease the transition.

Benefits of the CCC → UC pathway

  • Cost savings: Complete lower‑division requirements at a fraction of the cost.
  • Guaranteed admission options: Programs like TAG (Transfer Admission Guarantee).
  • Academic preparation: Build a strong foundation before transfer.
  • Second chance: Strengthen your academic record if needed.

Transfer requirements

To be eligible for transfer admission to a UC campus, you must meet minimum requirements:

  • Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of UC‑transferable credit
  • Earn at least a 2.4 GPA in UC‑transferable courses (2.8 for non‑California residents)
  • Complete the seven‑course pattern with grades of C or better:
    • Two transferable courses in English composition
    • One transferable course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning
    • Four transferable courses from at least two of: arts & humanities, social & behavioral sciences, physical & biological sciences

Most campuses and majors require higher GPAs and specific major‑prep courses. Always check requirements for your target major and campus.

IGETC and general education

IGETC is a series of courses that satisfy lower‑division general education requirements at UC and CSU campuses. It is not required for UC transfer, but can provide flexibility. Some majors (especially engineering/sciences) recommend focusing on major prep instead of IGETC.

Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)

Six UC campuses offer TAG:

  • UC Davis
  • UC Irvine
  • UC Merced
  • UC Riverside
  • UC Santa Barbara
  • UC Santa Cruz

TAG requirements vary by campus and major. TAG applications are typically due by September 30 for fall admission.

Application timeline (high level)

  • Sep 1‑30: TAG applications (if applicable)
  • Oct 1‑Nov 30: UC application submission
  • January: Transfer Academic Update (TAU)
  • March‑April: Admission decisions
  • June: Final transcripts and required course completion
  • September: Begin classes

Strategies for success

  • Start planning early with counselors.
  • Prioritize major preparation courses.
  • Maintain a strong GPA.
  • Use ASSIST.org for articulation agreements.
  • Apply broadly to increase options.
  • Craft strong Personal Insight Questions.
